72, 8, 1 p. + fold-out map. FORMAT of ITEMS: 23 x 31 cm.
DETAILS about IMAGES: Several
hundred b/w photographs; one color photograph;
one
panoramic view of the city. REGIONS or PROVINCES:
Northeast China; Shandong; CITIES:
Qingdao (Tsingtau) OTHER TOPICS COVERED:
Japanese business establishments,
their proprietors, officials, government and military installations. Laoshan landscapes;
Qingdao beaches; the former Strandhotel; old military batteries;
Tsingtau beer brewery; piers and the harbor; Qingdao railway station
and railroad transportation; factories and shops; street scenes; coal
and mining activity; gendarmerie
(police station); public gardens; European architecture; Japanese
architecture in China; elementary school; vintage automobile;
Japanese economic interests in
China; trade and commodities; banking and merchants;
NOTES: Very rare item; I have only ever seen one copy of
this book. Very exhaustive visual
documentary of Qingdao after the Japanese take-over shortly before.
Every shop, every monument, every corner of the city seems to be
photographically represented. The most exhaustive pre-war coverage I
have come across so far, even surpassing Friedrich Behme in comprehensiveness. The quality of the
images is, however, only documentary, and the quality of the
reproductions themselves in the book is somewhat less than satisfying.
What is of high value is the directory of officials, enterprises and
private citizens. This appended
(complete it would appear) index of names of Japanese shops and
individuals makes this volume not only an interesting pictorial guide,
but also a highly useful reference tool.

STATEMENTS ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHER(S): Beato took part in the
1860 military expedition on Beijing of the British-French troops as a
semi-official photographer (Theye p.384); In 1864 he transferred to
Yokohama. In existance are rather dramatic images of the attack on the Taku
Forts (Dagu paotai 大沽炮台) near Tianjin (compare the volume Ostasien
1900-1902); photographs of other battle sites, including
those of the participants of the punitive and destructive mission to
the Beijing Summer Palace. As far as is known, Beato left the negatives
behind in Yokohama (see Wilshusen p.181/2, Theye p.28). These negatives
were then taken over by his successor, Baron Raimund von Stillfried
Ratenicz, who then - in 1883 - sold the whole lot again to his
successor and assistant Kusakabe Kimbei and the company of A. Farsari

domestic deprivation. This book is a powerful addition to our pictorial

1,900 photographs, negatives, and lantern slides augmented by written
materials. More than two-thirds of this collection pertains to China
and Southeast Asia. In 1979, an exhibit, China's Inner Asian Frontier:
Photographs of the Wulsin Expedition to Northwest China in 1923, and
a book by the same title [for more on this book see the entry above

twist: the accompanying sketches by Schiff add a light and humorous
touch to the visual narrative. A copy of this book in good

Likewise, Friedrich Schiff's works are even more rare, and a numbered first edition of his famous Maskee - a Shanghai Sketchbook

Text of this small but well produced pamphlet in French and Chinese. It
accompanies an exhibition of photographs which for a number of
reasons should be more widely known. One of my reasons for this
statement is that here we have probably the earliest photographic
documentation of some of China's most prominent and
important architectural structures, captured on film (or, rather,
glass), thirty years before Liang Sicheng 梁思成 and his group conducted
their methodic survey of Chinese historical architecture in the
interior. Another interesting aspect of this collection is the visual
recording of customs, crafts and festivals, which again to the best of
my knowledge constitutes the first such record of daily life in Henan
province. Visit my Zenfolio gallery for a first impression of these photographs.
